Adult enrichment schedule features new classes, old favorites

Now that the school year is underway for local kids, Royal Oak Neighborhood Schools is offering adults a chance to get back into the classroom, too.
The district’s Continuing Education Program recently kicked off its fall lineup of adult enrichment classes, offering a little something for everyone. Authentic Indian cooking, dream interpretation, home page creation and candle making are just a few of the skills local residents can learn over the next few months.

“Every fall we have a variety of new classes,” said Patrick Wolynski, director of continuing education for Royal Oak Neighborhood Schools.

“Beaded Bookmarks,” “Make Your Own Potpourri,” “Clothing Repair and Maintenance,” “Comfort Foods,” and “Native American Totem & Spirit Guide Meditation,” are among many new offerings this season. Classes run through November and are held at several locations throughout the school district.

While there are many classes that have continued to generate interest over the years, Wolynski says he anticipates “Thinking about Becoming a Landlord?” will be a top choice this season. The class made its debut last year and drew a positive response from students.

“We filled every class,” said Wolynski. “It’s very popular.”

The class, scheduled for Oct. 22, will help students decide if becoming a landlord is a financially sound choice for them. Topics to be discussed include choosing the right community and property, financing options, real estate taxes, lease agreements and accounting issues.

According to Wolynski, many students are also drawn to some of the unique classes taught by instructor Anton Anderssen.

“He’s very good,” said Wolynski. “He’s got a following.”

Anderssen teaches classes at more than 20 school districts throughout the Detroit area. His Royal Oak classes this season include “Baked in a Pumpkin Shell,” in which students learn to prepare meals served from a sugar pumpkin, and “Anton’s Cookie Cones,” which teaches students how to create a layered gourmet cookie mix to give as a gift.

“I tend not to run your everyday, garden variety, run-of-the-mill classes,” said Anderssen.

Anderssen’s newest class in Royal Oak, “Anton’s Rainbow Salsa,” was held on Monday, and involved making one of his original salsa recipes layered like a rainbow in a glass jar. He also offers creative classes such as “Self-Publish Your Own Christmas Cards” and entrepreneurial classes such as “Anton’s Vacation/Leisure Travel Agent Program.”

Anderssen says he develops each one of his classes from scratch, which includes writing his own books.

“I create my own trends,” he said. “My classes are more than education. I also try to create memories.”
